Mustang Public Schools
Elementary Curriculum

The Elementary Curriculum has been designed and developed to ensure that all students in Mustang receive a strong foundation in core curriculum areas.  Elementary curriculum maps have been developed for Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Art, Music and Spanish.  The maps are aligned with the Oklahoma Priority Academic Skills, and with National Standards.  Maps are currently being developed for Physical Education.  Teams of teachers systematically review and, as appropriate, revise the curriculum to ensure the needs of our students are being met.

High expectations throughout the district have led to our students reaching 90 percent proficiency in reading on state testing.  The district is working toward this goal in math as well.  There has been a strong emphasis on writing at the elementary level, as research shows the importance of writing to all other curricular areas.

Professional learning communities of teachers work hard to stay current on the latest educational trends and research.  Four questions frame discussions among teachers:

  1. What do we expect our students to know?
  2. How do we know when they have mastered the material?
  3. What happens if they do not master the skills?
  4. What happens if they already know the skills?

These questions lead to great discussion on enrichment and remediation.  Interventions are planned student specific.  To support this endeavor Mustang Schools credential elementary students in reading and math in grades one through five.  This process helps ensure students are ready as they transition from grade to grade; school to school; and eventually school to life.

Each school site does an annual student growth and achievement report.  The report looks at student enrollment, demographics, testing data, credentialing data, instructional information addressing the four questions above, early childhood information, professional development, health, wellness and safety, facilities, and short and long term needs.  The information allows the district to look at the performance of different subgroups of students.  The report also drives decision making.

Professional development plays a vital role in supporting the curriculum in Mustang Schools.  The Mustang Professional Development Team works hard to provide ongoing opportunities which promote continuous professional skill development, enhancing effective instruction and student achievement.  A yearly needs assessment helps the committee identify the areas needed to equip our faculty and staff to meet the ever changing needs of our students.
