College Prep Diploma versus MPS Standard Diploma
Senate Bill 982 was passed by the Oklahoma Legislature and signed into law by Governor Henry on June 7, 2005. The law requires eighth grade students entering the ninth grade to complete a college preparatory curriculum, unless the student’s parent or legal guardian approves the student to “opt out” of the college preparatory curriculum. The law is designed to ensure that students have mastered essential core academic content and skills in preparation for college.
The primary difference between the state’s college preparatory curriculum and the district’s standard diploma is the state’s requirement of two foreign language or two computer science credits.
Consent for the college preparatory curriculum is passive. For a student to “opt out” of the curriculum, a parent or legal guardian must sign the Opt Out form and return it to the school at the time of enrollment.
